Biodiversity helps maintain the ecological balance of nature. Destruction of biodiversity can, therefore, have a disastrous effect on the environment. So, biodiversity needs to be protected. Biodiversity meets are carried out to discuss methods for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and are therefore needed. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the Biological Diversity Convention that conducts periodic meetings to ensure implementation of the convention. Till date 14 such meetings have been held with the first meeting being held in 1994 November and December, in Nassau, Bahamas.
