Solution

Oxides of phosphorous:

  • The two common oxides of phosphorus are Phosphorus(III) oxide (P4O6) and Phosphorus (V) oxide (P4O10).

Structure of P4O10:

  • A single bond consists of one sigma bond and a double bond consist of one sigma and one pi bond.
  • Phosphorus (V) oxide (P4O10) is a white solid that sublime from solid to vapor phase at 300oC.
The sum of number of σ bonds and π bonds present in P4O10 is- Chemistry Q & A
  • Hence, in the structure, there are 16 sigma bonds.
