Question

What is the number of valence electrons in chlorine?

Open in App
Solution

Definition of valence electron.

The number of electrons present in the outermost shell(valence shell) of an atom are called valence electrons.

Electronic configuration of chlorine is given below.

Atomic number of chlorine = 17

Electronic configuration = 2,8,7 ie, K = 2,L = 8,M = 7

A chlorine atom has 7 electrons in its valence shell. ie, M-shell.

Hence the number of valence electron in chlorine is 7 electrons.
