Question

What is the octet rule exception?

Open in App
Solution

  1. According to the octet rule, the atoms prefer eight electrons in their outermost shell by either losing or gaining electrons.
  2. The atom is stable in two conditions: Either it is half-filled or it is full-filled.
  3. The elements which obey the octet rule are from s and p-block elements.
  4. The exception exists for Hydrogen, Helium, and Lithium.
  5. The elements which are having unpaired electron are less stable and do not obeys the octet rule.
  6. The element Hydrogen, Helium, and Lithium do not follow the octet rule because they contain 1, 2, and 3 electrons respectively.
  7. Transition elements are also an exception to this rule because they have d-orbitals and hence it can only hold 18 electrons in their outermost shell.
