The oxidation state of Oxygen(O) = -2

The charge on MnO4-=-1

Consider the oxidation state of Manganese(Mn) = x

Now,

x-2×4=-1x=-1+8x=+7

So, the oxidation number of manganese (Mn) in potassium permanganateMnO4- is +7.

Part 2: Calculating the oxidation number of manganese (Mn) in Mn2O3

The oxidation state of Oxygen(O) = -2

Consider the oxidation state of Manganese(Mn) = x

Now,

x(2)-2×3=0x=+3

So, the oxidation number of manganese (Mn) in potassium permanganateMn2O3 is +3.

The oxidation state of Oxygen(O) = -2
