Solution

Carbon compound:

  • Carbon creates a huge number of compounds with a variety of other elements; these compounds are referred to as carbon compounds. Carbon forms the basic molecule methane (CH4).
  • A hydrocarbon is a chemical substance that is made up of carbon and hydrogen.

Types of carbon compounds:

Carbon compounds are divided into two categories. Acyclic and cyclic

Cyclic hydrocarbon are cyclic structures.

They are divided into two types:

  • Alicyclic hydrocarbon: They contain one closed chain consisting of carbon and hydrogen only. For eg: Cyclobutane.
  • Aromatic hydrocarbon: they have hexagonal ring with alternate double bond character. they are many obtained from petroleum and has aroma. eg benzene (C6H6).

Acyclic hydrocarbon has open chain of carbon .

This is further divided into two types;

  • Saturated carbon compounds
    Saturated carbon compounds have just single bonds connecting the carbon atoms in a ring or chain. Saturated chain carbon molecules are most commonly represented by alkanes. The alkane family includes ethane C2H6.
  • Unsaturated carbon compounds
    Double or triple bonds are bonded together by various carbon atoms in a ring or chain in unsaturated carbon compounds. Alkenes and alkynes are the most well-known unsaturated carbon molecules. Carbon atoms in alkenes are connected by double bonds, while carbon atoms in alkynes are connected by triple bonds.
