Question

What is the pH of Blood?

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: pH

  • The pH of any solution is defined as the negative log of Hydrogen ion concentration.
  • Mathematically, pH=-log10[H+]
  • pH is used to determine the nature of the solution whether it is acidic, basic, or neutral.
SolutionpH range
Acidic1 - 6.9
Neutral7
Basic7.1 - 14

Part 2: Identifying the pH of the blood

  • Depending on the values of pH we can further classify the solution as strongly and weakly acidic and basic.
  • The pH value of the Blood is ranging from 7.35 to 7.45, which is usually mildly basic in nature. However human body resists the pH value of close to 7.40.
  • When there is a rise in the alkaline levels induces an increase in the pH levels it is called alkalosis because the blood is too alkaline, whereas when the acid in the blood increases, it is called acidosis.
