Question

What is the ph of sodium hydrogencarbonate?

Open in App
Solution

An aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate would be having a pH value above 7, whatever its concentration.sodium hydrogencarbonate (NaHCO3) is a salt of a weak acid, H2CO3, and a strong base,NaOH.
Since carbonicacid is a weak acid, it remains undissociated. Hence, the solution becomes basic due to the presence of additional OH- ions produced by hydrolysis.
pH is 8.3 at 77°F tempreture.
HCO3- + H2O = H2CO3 + OH-
