Question

What is the phase difference between acceleration and velocity of a particle executing simple harmonic motion?

Open in App
Solution

We know that,

The velocity is

v=Aωcos(ωt+ϕ)

The acceleration is

a=Aω2sin(ωt+ϕ)

Now,

cos(ωt+ϕ+π2)=sin(ωt+ϕ)

Now, the acceleration is

a=Aω2cos(ωt+ϕ+π2)

Hence, the phase difference is π2
