Question

What is the phenomenon involved in the working of a transformer?

Open in App
Solution

A transformer operates on the principals of “electromagnetic induction”, in the form of Mutual Induction. Mutual induction is the process by which a coil of wire magnetically induces a voltage into another coil located in close proximity to it. A transformer consists of two coils, primary and secondary. The voltage in the primary coil produces current in the same which produces magnetic field around it and also inside the secondary coil. Thus due to induction, voltage is induced in the secondary coil, however its magnitude is determined by the number of turns in the coils.
