Question

What is the physical state of water at 0°C?

Open in App
Solution

A substance may exist in three states of matter (i.e. solid, liquid or gas) depending upon the conditions of temperature and pressure.

  1. Water also exists in all three states i.e. solid, liquid, and gaseous.
  2. Water exists as ice in the solid-state, as liquid water in a liquid state and as water vapours (steam) in a gaseous state.
  3. It exists in different states at different temperatures.
  4. Water remains solid at or below the freezing point, that is 0°C.
  5. It remains in a liquid state in the temperature range 0°C-100°C.
  6. It remains in a gaseous state at or above the boiling point, that is 100°C.
  7. At 0°C water particles have the least kinetic energy due to the low temperature, resulting in a greater intermolecular force of attraction.
  8. Hence, water solidifies at this temperature resulting in its solid state (Ice).

Hence, water exists as solid (ice) at 0°C.
