Dikaryon:

  1. The formation of a dikaryon is a characteristic feature of the subkingdom Dikarya.
  2. Dikaryotic are commonly formed during sexual reproduction in fungi.
  3. The fungi such as ascomycetes and basidiomycetes undergo an intervening dikaryotic stage (n + n, i.e., two nuclei per cell) occurs.
  4. Such a condition is called a dikaryon and the phase is called the dikaryophase of fungus.
  5. The parental nuclei fuse and the cells become diploid.
  6. Dikaryon contains two haploid genomes. It is different from a diploid cell as the two haploid genomes are present in different nuclei.
  7. The fungi form fruiting bodies in which reduction division occurs, leading to the formation of haploid spores.
