What is the ploidy of functional megaspore in flowering plants.

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

In flowering plants, the process of megasporogenesis results in the formation of four megaspores. Out of them, three degenerate, and the remaining one acts as the functional megaspore. This functional megaspore divides mitotically and gives rise to the female gametophyte (also known as the embryo sac ) which consists of the 3 antipodals, 1 central cell , 1 egg cell and 2 synergids.
Ploidy of the cells are as follows-
Cell Ploidy
Nucellus 2n (diploid)
Megaspore mother cell 2n (diploid)
Functional megaspore n (haploid)
Antipodal cell n (haploid)
Central cell 2n (diploid)
Egg cell n (haploid)
Synergid n (haploid)
