Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Parliament. The Constitution fixes the maximum membership to 250. Most of the members are elected by indirect election by state and territorial legislatures using single transferable votes while the President can appoint 12 members for their contributions to art, literature, science, and social services. The tenure of the members is of six years.
