According to Jerome an excellent preventive way against sea-sickness was to stand in the centre of the deck and then move the body to keep it straight as the ship heaved and pitched. He also suggested to lean the body forward till the deck almost touched the nose when the front of the ship rose. In addition, he wanted to lean backwards when the back of the ship got up. He believed that this way it was possible to avoid sea-sickness for at least an hour or two.
