Solution

Biodiversity: The variety of life forms found on the earth is called biodiversity.

Biodiversity loss:

  1. A decrease in the diversity or population of particular a species within an ecosystem is termed biodiversity loss.
  2. Biodiversity loss describes the decline in genetic variability and variety of particular species in an area.

Loss in biodiversity can be due to natural factors and human-made factors:

  1. Natural biodiversity loss can be due to seasonal changes such as the onset of spring increases the opportunities for feeding and breeding, thus increasing biodiversity, while the onset of winters tends to decrease biodiversity.
  2. Natural biodiversity loss also includes ecological disturbances such as volcanic eruptions and floods that decrease the diversity of life forms in an area.
  3. Human-made biodiversity loss includes overexploitation is the harvesting of animals such as fish for gaming, beyond their surviving capacity resulting in loss of biodiversity.
  4. Pollution is another man-made factor responsible for biodiversity loss such as water pollution (is the addition of any material into the water changes its physical, chemical, and biological properties of water) for example the continuous addition of sewage waste in the water bodies leads to eutrophication thereby reducing the amount of dissolved oxygen in water, thus making a threat of life of organisms living in the water.
