What is the primary step in gene regulation?

Open in App
Solution

Gene regulation:

  1. It is a mechanism of switching on or off the expression of genes depending upon the requirement of the cell.
  2. Gene regulation is the mechanism by which a cell expresses a gene to synthesize proteins for the growth and development of a cell.
  3. The primary step in gene regulation is transcription.

Transcription:

  1. The primary step of gene regulation is transcription i.e. process by which information from DNA is converted to RNA i.e. mRNA.
  2. In this process, only one strand of DNA is copied into RNA.
  3. A transcription unit comprises three regions namely a Promoter, a structural gene, and a terminator.
  4. A promoter is a region where RNA polymerase bind to initiate transcription, a structural gene contains the coding information of DNA and a terminator is defined as the codon where transcription stops.
