The municipal waste or wastewater generated in homes and cities is called sewage, in which human excreta is the major component.
The treatment of sewage is done in two stages i.e primary and secondary.
Primary treatment of sewage :
It involves the removal of large and small particles from sewage through physical methods such as filtration and sedimentation.
Filtration of sewage removes the floating debris and sedimentation removes grit (small pebbles, and soil particles) from the sewage.
All the solid particles settle down to form primary sludge and supernatant forms the effluent which is taken from, the primary sludge tank and transferred to another tank for secondary treatment.
