Solution

  1. A thermometer is a device that is used to measure the temperature of a body.
  2. The normal thermometer which we use, in our daily life, is filled with mercury.
  3. The principle used in any thermometer is the expansion and contraction of liquid, i.e. mercury, according to the increase and decrease in temperature.
  4. When the temperature of the body increases then mercury expands while when the temperature of the body decreases mercury contracts.

Hence, the principle used in constructing any thermometer is the expansion and contraction of liquid.
