Question

What is the probability that the month of January may have 5 mondays in a leap year?

Open in App
Solution

Follow any of below methods

Number of days in the month of January in a leap or non-leap year = 31

There are four complete weeks in the month of January.

There are three more extra days in the month.

If the month starts on Saturday or Sunday or Monday, there are 5 Mondays in the month of January.

So, the probability of getting 5 Mondays in the month of January (or any month with 31 days) = 3/7.

For a leap year and non-leap year there will be 31 days in the month of January

Number of days in week =7

If 1st of January is a Monday then
1,8,15,22,29

If 2nd of January is a Monday then
2,9,16,23,30

If 3rd of January is a Monday the
3,10,17,24,31

So,
Number weeks of 5 mondays=3

Probability=3/7
