When plants, at the base of the food chain, are grown in soil contaminated with radiation and such plants are consumed by herbivores, the animals retain the toxic substances within them. Upon consumption of the herbivores by animals higher up in the food chain, those animals also ingest the toxic substances. These substances accumulate and increase by multiple folds as they go along the food chain. This phenomenon is known as biomagnification.
