What is the process called when ATP is synthesized by plants?

Open in App
Solution

ATP:

  1. ATP or adenosine triphosphate is an important biomolecule that is utilized by living organisms to derive energy for performance of different biological processes and functions.
  2. It is referred to as the energy currency of the cell that is present in different metabolic activities.
  3. The ATP molecules in living organisms are formed in the mitochondria and chloroplast.
  4. ATP molecules are formed by the addition of phosphate group, Pi, to the ADP molecules.

Phosphorylation:

  1. Phosphorylation means synthesis of ATP by addition of a phosphorous to ADP through an acid anhydride bond.
  2. In a plant cell, ATP is synthesized in both in chloroplasts and mitochondria by phosphorylation.
  3. During photosynthesis, ATP is synthesized in chloroplasts by process called photophosphorylation.
  4. Whereas during respiration, ATP is synthesized in mitochondria by process called oxidative phosphorylation.
