What is the process that is exhibited by cryptogams as part of their reproductive cycle, that enables them to stabilise the chromosomal number when required ?
Alternation of Generations
In lower non-seed bearing plants (cryptogams) a process known as alternation of generations enables reproduction in which the plant oscillates between 2 distinct forms during its entire life cycle. In cryptogams, it manifests in a dominant haploid gametophyte stage that gives rise to a diploid sporophyte stage that will, in turn produce a new haploid gametophyte.
