Question

What is the product of two complex numbers?

Open in App
Solution

Complex numbers:

complex numbers are written in the form, x+iy where x andy belongs to real numbers and i=-1 .

The product of complex numbers is also complex, meaning there will be real parts as well as imaginary parts.

Example.

Let, a=2+3i and b=4+5i

Their product will be a×b.

a×b=2+3i4+5i

a×b=24+25i+3i4+3i5i

a×b=8+10i+12i+15i2

a×b=15-1+22i+8[i2=-1]

a×b=-15+22i+8

a×b=22i-7

Let, a=2-3i and b=2+3i

Their product will be a×b.

a×b=2-3i2+3i

a×b=22-3i2[a2-b2=a+ba-b]

a×b=4-9i2

a×b=4+9[i2=-1]

a×b=13

Hence, the product of two complex numbers is sometimes complex and sometimes purely real.
