Dear Nama, The purpose of grafting is to take advantage of the traits of different plants and combining them by making them grow together ( eg: disease resistant, to retain varietal characteristics, to adapt varieties to adverse soil or climatic conditions, to repair injured trees etc). Grafting is a horticultural technique whereby tissues of plants are joined so as to continue their growth together. The upper part of the combined plant is called the scion while the lower part is called the stock. The success of this joining requires that the vascular tissues grow together and such joining is called inosculation. The technique is most commonly used in asexual propagation of commercially grown plants for the horticultural. Cross pollination can partially be an alternative to this but the success rate will be lesser and time taken will be longer.
