Question

What is the purpose of an intron?

Solution

Intron:

  1. These are non-coding sequences of DNA that do not code for any functional protein.
  2. The genes of eukaryotes consist of two regions,i.e Introns, and exons.
  3. Introns are the non-coding sequence of DNA and exons are the coding sequence of DNA.
  4. Thus, introns do not code for any amino acid during the translation process and are removed ( by splicing of exons together) from pre-mRNA after transcription.
  5. But, the purpose of introns is to create a variety of proteins by alternative splicing mechanisms from a single gene.
