Question

What is the reason behind the stability of a colloidal solution?

Open in App
Solution

When the particles remain suspended at equilibrium in the solution then the colloidal solution is said to be stable. Stability is decreased by the accumulation and sedimentation of dispersed phase particles.

Stability of colloidal solution:

  • The colloid stability is due to the presence of charges in colloid particles.
  • These particles repel each other due to the presence of the charges.
  • The charges are identical and equivalent and do not join together to form larger particles.
  • As no large particles are formed the colloid particles remain scattered throughout the solution resulting in stabilizing the colloidal solution.
