Question

What is the reason why chlorine gas turns colourless potassium bromide solution to coloured?

Open in App
Solution

The reactivity of chlorine is higher than bromine. Thus, chlorine reacts with potassium bromide to displace bromine, thereby forming potassium chloride. The free bromine ions that got separated from potassium bromide solution impart an orange colour to the solution.

2KBr+Cl22KCl+Br2
