Question

What is the reference frame

Open in App
Solution

Dear student

To explain reference frames let’s start with a reference body. So I ask you, where’s New York City. You would say it’s well defined point (region) in The United States which in turn is situated on the Earth. Here earth is the reference body. You define NYC’s position with respect to the Earth.

Now a reference frame is just an x, y, z coordinate system which gives us the position of any object with respect to it. Let’s say you’re in your room, sitting in front of your PC which is in the center of the room. Here the room is the frame of reference and I describe your position with respect to it (center of the room)

For a better understanding watch this 1960s black and white video from the University of Toronto. It does an excellent job at explaining it.
