Question

What is the relation between relative permeability and magnetic susceptibility?

Open in App
Solution

Formula used:

Magnetic susceptibility, Xm=IH

I is the intensity of magnetization.

H is the intensity of the magnetizing field.

Relative permeability, μr=μμ0

μ the permeability of the material.

μ0 free space.

Relative permeability in terms of susceptibility:

μr=(1+Xm)

Calculation:

Let's compute the net field within a magnetic substance.

B=B0+Bi

Here,

B0 is the net field will be a resultant of magnetization due to the applied field.

Bi magnetization due to induced magnetism.

and,

B0=μ0HBi=μ0I

By substituting μ=BH and Xm=1H in the above equation, we get

μ=μ0(1+Xm)μμ0=(1+Xm)μr=(1+Xm)

Therefore, the relationship between relative permeability and magnetic susceptibility is μr=(1+Xm).
