Question

What is the relation between the angle of incidence and angle of reflection in case of reflection by a plane mirror?

Open in App
Solution

  1. In a plane mirror, the angle of incidence and angle of reflection are equal.
  2. The angle of incidence is the angle, created by the incident ray with the normal to the mirror and the angle of reflection is the angle, created by the reflected ray with the normal to the mirror.
  3. Now, for the reflection happening in a plane mirror;
  4. Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
  5. For example, if a light ray falls upon a plane mirror at an angle of30° with the normal then the reflected light ray will also make 30° with the normal.

Hence, the angle of incidence and angle of reflection are equal in the case of reflection by a plane mirror.
