Question

What is the relationship between Metallic character and Ionisation energy?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Ionization energy is the minimum energy of an element to lose its electron.
  2. In other words, it is the energy required to remove an electron from an isolated gaseous atom.
  3. For example : X(g)X+(g)+e-H1H1isthefirstionisationenergy
  4. Metallic character is the ability of an element to lose its outer shell electrons.
  5. The metallic character decreases from left to right across a period.
  6. Example of metals are Iron(Fe), Copper(Cu), etc.
  7. Metallic character is inversely proportional to the ionization energy.
  8. Lower the ionisation energy more is the metallic character of the element.
