What is the relative speed when a train with a speed of 56 Km/hr
(i) crosses a bridge of length 150m
(ii) when it crosses another train of speed 36 Km/hr which also moves in the same direction.
56 Km/hr, 20 Km/hr
Relative Speed: Relative speed is defined as the speed of a moving object with respect to another. When two objects are moving in the same direction, the relative speed is calculated as their difference. When the two objects are moving in opposite directions, the relative speed is computed by adding the two speeds.
(i) Since the bridge doesn't have movement, no speed for it. So, Relative speed = speed of train only = 56 Km/hr
(ii) Since the other train also moves in the same direction. Relative speed = Sum of both the speeds= 56 Km/hr - 36 Km/hr = 20 Km/hr
