Question

What is the relative velocity when two bodies move in opposite direction?

Open in App
Solution

When two bodies A and B move in opposite direction,

Velocity of A relative to B is given by
VAB=VAVB
If we consider positive x-axis along VA,
VA=VA^i and VB=VB^i (since B moves in opposite direction)
VAB=VA^i(VB^i)
VAB=(VA+VB)^i
So, relative velocity is given by (VA+VB)
