Question

What is the relationship between mass and frequency?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Masses in vibrational systems undergoing simple harmonic motion will have a certain time period for their oscillation.
  2. The frequency is the inverse of the time period and is equal to the number of oscillations completed per unit time.
  3. For a mass spring system, the frequency of its motion can be expressed as f=12πkm. Here, f is the frequency, k is the spring constant and m is the mass.

Hence, the greater is the mass, lesser is the frequency and vice versa.
