What is relationship between porosity and permeability?

Open in App
Solution

Relationship between porosity and permeability:

  1. Porosity is a measure of the empty space found in between rocks and is equal to the ratio of the volume of empty space to the total volume of the rock.
  2. Permeability tells us how easy it is for fluids to flow between the rocks.
  3. Porosity dictates how much fluid can be store in between fluids, whereas, permeability dictates the ease of flow of fluids in between the rocks.

Hence, rocks with high permeability will have have high porosity but, the reverse is not always true.
