Question

What is the role of activated charcoal in gas masks used in coal mines?

Open in App
Solution

Activated charcoal is porous in nature, thus it acts as a good adsorbent.

It can easily adsorb large volumes of poisonous gases but cannot adsorb oxygen gas effectively.

So, in coal mines, activated charcoal in gas mask provides fresh air for inhaling.

In gas mask, charcoal adsorbs the pollutant gases like SO2,NO2,CH4,CO2 etc. present in the atmosphere.
