Activated charcoal is porous in nature, thus it acts as a good adsorbent.

It can easily adsorb large volumes of poisonous gases but cannot adsorb oxygen gas effectively.

So, in coal mines, activated charcoal in gas mask provides fresh air for inhaling.

In gas mask, charcoal adsorbs the pollutant gases like $S O_{2}, N O_{2}, C H_{4}, C O_{2}$ etc. present in the atmosphere.
