Question

What is the role of bacteria in the nitrogen cycle?

Open in App
Solution

The role of bacteria:

  1. Biological nitrogen fixation (eg. Azotobacter, Rhizobium).
  2. Decomposition, ammonification and nitrification (eg. Bacillus ramosus, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter).
  3. Denitrification, eg. Pseudomonas.

Explanation: Nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia, which can be absorbed by plants. This process is called biological nitrogen fixation. Rhizobium, Azotobacter, and cyanobacteria are a few examples of nitrogen-fixing bacteria that can be either free-living or symbiotic.
