Question

What is the role of convection in the atmosphere ?

Open in App
Solution

Convection: The solar radiation heats the surface of rocks, soil, and landmass in general. As a result, the air in contact with the surface of these rocks, soil, etc. gets heated and rises. This sets up a vertical movement of air called convection.

Convection currents play a significant role in the atmosphere in the following ways:

  1. Leading to the formation of vertical currents and establishing wind formation.
  2. Winds help to lower the temperature of a region and provide a cooling effect.
  3. The convection currents in a coastal region lead to the formation of land and sea breeze that helps in maintaining a moderate climate.
