Every accused has a right to defend himself as per the Constitution of India. Article 22 of our Fundamental right allows individual to be defended by a lawyer. Like wise, Article 39A of the Constitution places a duty upon the State to provide a lawyer to any citizen who is unable to engage one due to poverty or other disability.
It is here the role of Defence lawyer comes in who represents the case of an accused in the Judiciary. His role is to :
a. To protect the rights of an accused to be defended.
b. To give him a fair trial and opportunity to defend himself.
c. To represent his case in the court of law.
d. To collect evidence, to negotiate a bail, to work in the best interest of his client.
