Question

What is the role of ethidium bromide in DNA samples?

Open in App
Solution

1. Ethidium bromide is a fluorescent dye intercalating between the bases of nucleic acids.

2. It permits a very convenient and easier identification of the DNA fragments in the gels.

3. They are added to the sample of DNA before loading in order to enable the visualization of such fragments in the gel or could be added in the electrophoresis buffer.

4. The binding of this ethidium bromide to DNA changes its rigidity and mass and hence its mobility.
