Rheostat was first introduced by the English scientist Sir Charles Wheatstone.
The word rheostat is derived from Greek word “rheos” and “-statis” which means a current controlling device.
Rheostat is termed as a variable resistor which is used to control the flow of electric current in the electrical circuit by manually increasing or decreasing the resistance.
It can be represented by two symbols:
American Standard : The American standard symbol is represented by three terminals and zigzag lines.
6. International Standard: The international standard symbol is represented with a rectangular box with three terminals.
