What is the role of glomerulus in kidney?

The glomerulus is a network of capillaries, located at the beginning of a nephron in the kidney. The afferent arteriole brings blood to the glomerulus and the efferent arteriole takes blood away from the glomerulus. The glomerulus filters blood and produces the glomerular filtrate. This filtrate contains water, glucose, salts and urea. Large molecules such as protein are too large to fit through the blood capillary walls. The Bowman's capsule collects the filtrate and it enters the tubules of the nephron.
