What is the role of KOH in the experiment to show that CO₂ is necessary for photosynthesis?

Experiment :
KOH is the chemical formula for potassium hydroxide.
KOH absorbs the available CO₂ in the flask and thus, the plant cannot carry out photosynthesis and is not able to synthesize starch.
Later, the iodine test gives a negative result proving that no starch has been synthesized.
Therefore, CO₂ is necessary for photosynthesis.
