What is the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom struggle from period 1915 onwards with reference to non-cooperation movement, civil disobedience movement & quit india movement?
Answer:
Initially Gandhi began to appeal to people by saying that we can attain salvation only through farmers and it is not going to come from rich landlords, doctors, or lawyers. Gandhi wanted to make nationalism more representative of the population. In 1916, in Lucknow Gandhi was approached by a peasant from Champaran who highlighted the harsh treatment of peasants by British indigo planters. Gandhiji became a national leader due to Rowlatt Satyagraha. This made Gandhiji run the campaign of Non-cooperation Movement against the British, people were asked to boycott British goods, stop attending education institutions and asked people to not pay any tax. As per Gandhi-Irwin pact, there was agreement to release all prisoners and stop the Civil Disobedience movement. When the conference in London failed, Gandhi resumed the Civil disobedience movement. The Quit India movement began in 1942. It was a mass movement.
