What Is the Role of Mitochondria in Respiration?
1. Mitochondria play a significant role in respiration.
2. Mitochondria are the site of the TCA cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
3. The electron transport system is present in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
4. Pyruvate is transported to the matrix of mitochondria after glycolysis, where it is converted into acetyl CoA and then acetyl CoA enters the Krebs cycle.
5. This ATP production process is called the Krebs cycle or citric acid cycle. Mitochondria conduct this process by oxidization of glucose products, like- NADH, and pyruvate.
