Placenta in humans is discoid structure developed on the wall of the uterus. It connects the vascular system of the mother to that of the child through the umblical cord. It function is to supply oxygen, nutrients etc to the developing foetus. It also helps in elimination of wastes like carbon dioxide from the foetal blood. In the final stages of development (by end of third trimister) antibody IgG is also transferred from the mother's circulation to the foetus through the placenta that provides passive immunity to the child after parturition.
