Question

What is the role of protein pumps in active transport?

Open in App
Solution

Active Transport:

  1. Protein pumps are transmembrane proteins, which are involved in the active transport of ions across the membrane against the concentration gradient.
  2. Active transport is the movement of molecules across a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration—against the concentration gradient.
  3. Active transport requires cellular energy to achieve this movement which is derived from ATP hydrolysis.
  4. The binding of a molecule brings about conformational changes in the transmembrane carrier protein and it is then released on the other side of the membrane.
