The outermost layer of the tooth, which incidentally is the hardest substance in the human body, is the enamel. It is formed of calcium phosphate and carbonate with enamel rods. It performs the following important functions:
The enamel protects the inner layers of a tooth, namely dentine, cementum, and dental pulp.
It aids the tooth to perform its daily activities such as biting, chewing, grinding, and crushing of food.
Healthy enamel has aesthetic value too making our teeth look white and our smile beautiful!
