What is the role of water in Chemical Reactions?
On the basis of consumption or creation of water, two types of chemical reactions are – hydrolysis and dehydration.
Hydrolysis: A molecule of water disrupts a compound in hydrolysis that breaks its bonds. Water itself splits into OH- and H+. Then, one part of the severed compound bonds with a hydrogen ion(H+) and the other with a hydroxyl group(OH-).
Dehydration:-One reactant in dehydration synthesis gives a hydrogen atom. Another reactant gives a hydroxyl group to synthesize a new product. To form its covalent bond, a molecule of water as a byproduct is released. This is also known as a condensation reaction.
